You may have heard the term “Web 2.0,” but what is it and what does it mean to you? Often Web 2.0 is used to describe a social network or a particularly novel-looking website, however, distinct underlying principles of sharing and interconnectivity separate Web 2.0 sites and services from their predecessors. Join the Chicago chapter of the MIT Enterprise Forum as we welcome Jason Fried, founder of 37signals, and Harper Reed, CTO of Threadless, two locally and internationally renown experts, as we discuss: more…

Yes, We Kern /// Winner Profile

March 23, 2009 by Renata

We asked, Gustavo Netto — the winner of our Yes We Kern contest — a couple of questions to learn a little more about this young Brazilian designer.

gustavo_netto_tee

Gustavo is a young designer from a small town in Brazil (Viçosa, MG). Viçosa, is about 5,000 miles from Chicago.

Tell us about yourself, how did you get into design?

To tell you the truth, I never planned on working as a designer, it just happened. When I was younger, I really wanted to work in movies, but I ended up as an Architecture student at Viçosa’s Federal University (Universidade Federal de Viçosa).

In college, many friends started to ask me for help with design of logos, banners and all kinds of stuff. I always liked drawing and since I already knew how to work with some graphic software (corel draw, illustrator and photoshop), these jobs started popping up a lot! Soon, I was doing freelance and last year I got hired at Std1, where I work part time. I graduate at the end of this year (2009), after that I hope to pursue a graduate degree in Graphic Design ELISAVA (Escola Superior de Disseny) in Barcelona.

Who are your design heroes?
Being a self-taught designer, that’s really hard to answer. On the internet, I always see one amazing job after another and it’s hard to remember everyone’s names. So, I don’t really have a “hero”.

However, every time I need some good inspiration, I find great works at the Estúdio Alice website. They have wonderful illustrations and sometimes they add typographic elements to the designs. There’s also the Funnel team, specializing in info-graphics (something I have been studying a lot lately). You can see other cool sites I use as reference on my delicious page.

How was your process for designing the “yes we kern” winning tee?

I tried to create a design that was simple and creative at the same time… I chose Arial—one of the most known fonts in the world—and started playing with kerning. My objective was that the type lines of the words “Yes We” completed each other, becoming a unique drawing. Then I added some spaces to help out with the legibility and finished the design with the word “kern” written upsidedown to break the symmetry.

What do you want to do with the proceeds from the sales?

I would like to send 100% of the proceeds to a small theater company in my hometown of Ituiutaba, MG:  Teatro Vianinha. They are a small, but very active part o the cultural scene in Viçosa.

Here is where Gustavo has been sharing his work.

Cory Arcangel

March 19, 2009 by Jeremiah

Cory Arcagel will be at the Gene Siskel Film Center tonight, part of the Conversations at the Edge series by SAIC.

from CatE:
Best known for his Nintendo game cartridge hacks, multi-media trickster Cory Arcangel uses new and vintage computers, sound, performance, and the web to recontextualize popular figures (Super Mario Brothers, Bruce Springsteen, Simon & Garfunkel) and aesthetic systems (the instructional video, adult contemporary music, the “artist talk”) in subversively comedic ways. This evening, he’ll provide an overview of his practice, possibly including his Super Mario movies, the epic and aptly titled performance piece “Bruce Springsteen Born to Run Glockenspiel Addendum,” and an archetypal “experimental film,” complete with digital scratches and Final Cut Pro countdown. Co-presented by SAIC’s Parlor Room. 1998–2008, Cory Arcangel, USA, multiple formats, ca. 60 min.

CORY ARCANGEL is a computer artist, performer, and curator who lives and works in Brooklyn. His work centers on his love of personal computers and the internet. He co-founded the Beige Programming Ensemble. Recent exhibitions include the Whitney Museum, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Space1026, Philadelphia; the Migros Museum, Zurich; Team Gallery, New York; and Thaddaeus Ropac Gallery, Paris. His online portfolio and web portal is located at: Cory Arcangel.

Reactable

March 19, 2009 by Jeremiah

The reactable is a collaborative electronic music instrument with a tabletop tangible multi-touch interface. Several simultaneous performers share complete control over the instrument by moving and rotating physical objects on a luminous round table surface. By moving and relating these objects, representing components of a classic modular synthesizer, users can create complex and dynamic sonic topologies, with generators, filters and modulators, in a kind of tangible modular synthesizer or graspable flow-controlled programming language. -via MTG (Thanks for link, Professor Becker)

Buckminster Fuller at the MCA

March 17, 2009 by Jeremiah

Currently at the MCAChicago: March 14 – June 21, 2009. Check out the feature site for some good in depth info.

Geodesic Domer.

Philosopher. Forecaster. Designer. Poet. Inventor. Advocate of alternative energy.
R. Buckminster Fuller (1895-1983) was one of the greatest American thinkers of the 20th century — and a visionary for the 21st. Buckminster Fuller: Starting with the Universe is the first major US exhibition of Fuller’s work in 35 years and a testament to his fascinating mix of utopian vision and organic pragmatism. A combination of models, sketches, and other artifacts — many on view for the first time — represent six decades of the artist’s integrated approach to housing, transportation, communication, and cartography.
