I saw this show last year at the SFMOMA, best “sight” ever.

All starry-eyed for the lush colors of springtime? Then set your sights on Take your time: Olafur Eliasson at MCA from May 1 - September 13. As the first comprehensive survey of the Danish-Icelandic artist’s works in the U.S., this exhibit of sculptures, photos, and large-scale immersive environments, will leave you feeling like you’ve somersaulted in a kaleidoscope. Eliasson uses multicolored washes, prismatic mirrors, and focused lights, along with temperature, water, stone, moss—even fragrance—to shift passive perceptions of art to an active, sensory level. The Scandinavian artist refers to this as “a double action” which allows you to “see yourself seeing” and become one with the space around you.

from Flavorpill: Canny critics have long noted the overlapping late-19th-century technologies of railroads and motion pictures, but James Benning’s RR — which has its Chicago premiere tonight — is a more fluid integration of the two than anyone could have imagined. The film, reportedly the last he will shoot in 16mm, keeps with Benning’s structuralist landscape works. In films like Casting a Glance (2007) and 13 Lakes (2004), land, sky, and time put audiences into a uniquely meditative relationship with the American West; for RR, Benning spent several years collecting the 43 shots that comprise its portrait of the rails’ alternately romantic and consumerist connotations. Tonight, the acclaimed experimental director is on-hand to introduce the film and host a post-screening Q&A. - Max Goldberg

For one day each year, Columbia College takes over the South Loop for its Manifest Urban Arts Festival. Graduating seniors and plenty of student organizations all along Wabash Avenue sell their art wares, make music on four stages, show off their green art cars, and perform in readings, screenings, and showcases. This year’s Spectacle Fortuna, the parade that closes the party, is dedicated to author and commencement honoree Ray Bradbury, whose characters are brought to life in the form of elaborate puppets and costumes. Punk marching band Mucca Pazza help lead the parade participants down Michigan Avenue. - Morgan Phelps
