from Flavorpill: Visual Acoustics, a new documentary about the late architectural photographer Julius Shulman, speaks both to his largely unsurpassed talents and his role in the rise of Modernism as a visual missionary of the movement. Even avid architecture fans mostly know the work of So Cal luminaries like Richard Neutra, or the famous Case Study Houses, through photographs. And in that capacity, Shulman delivered Modernist architecture to a wider audience through iconic pictures, from the late 1930s onward. More than just beautiful documentation of glass houses and clean-lined buildings, his photographs expressed the movement’s ethos and sold its story of good living — its optimistic heart and soul. – Karsten Lund
