January 7, 2010 by Renata

Helvetica and the New York Subway System: The True (Maybe) Story. Is a limited edition book about the complicated set of events that led the New York Subway system to adopt Helvetica as their official typeface. The book was written by Paul Shaw, a design historian, teacher, lettering artist and type designer.

Professor Shaw first wrote his research findings about the subject on a shorter essay for AIGA Voice. The book introduces extensive notes, bibliography and a chronology of the New York City subway system.

The front cover of the book is set in Akzidenz Grotesk BQ Medium while the back cover in Helvetica Neue 65 medium. I guess you have to get the book, or read the original article to solve that mystery…
