Rafal Olbinski & “Freedom on the Fence”

The CIPBA, along with STA and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, is proud to present the film, “Freedom on the Fence,” produced by Andrea Marks and directed by Marks and Glenn Holsten. This 40-minute documentary of the history of Polish poster design will be followed by a presentation by one of the film’s featured artists, Rafal Olbinski. Mr. Olbinski is a master Polish-American painter and poster maker, and he will be serving on the Biennial jury during the weekend.

Jury Exhibition
Saturday / May 29 / 2010 / 6–8pm

Don’t miss the highlight of the Biennial jury weekend: the grand opening of the 2nd Biennial Jury Exhibition. Held at 661 W Diversey Pkwy, this exhibition will feature more than 80 works of these seven masters. Every paid attendee will receive a gorgeous 120-page color catalog of the exhibition and a 24” X 36” Biennial poster by Paula Scher, printed by our friends at the Graphic Arts Studio in Barrington, IL. The evening will also feature a raffle and live auction of Miki Shim-Rutter’s famous poster dresses—each transforming one of the judge’s posters into a wearable work of art.

The CIPBA and STA, along with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, are honored to present a lecture by Takashi Akiyama. Professor Akiyama teaches design at Tama Art University, and he is the director of the Takashi Akiyama Poster Museum in Nagaoka, Japan. His signature style is recognized worldwide as a powerful blend of energy, humor and social commentary. For decades, his work has been lauded by the world’s most important international competitions, including a gold medal in the 1986 Warsaw Bieniale. Professor Akiyama will present the illustrated posters of Japan, posters of the Chinese cultural revolution, and his own work. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to meet a master.
