James Goggin’s ‘Pop Culture Color Theory’ lecture is an ongoing, continually evolving project which explores humankind’s attempts at codifying and commodifying color. From video test patterns to International Klein Blue, the Pantone Matching System to the Homeland Security Advisory System, color is endlessly refracted by our subjective perception into adaptable economic and semiotic structures.
Two weeks in Urbino, Italy at the ISIA Urbino / Werkplaats summer school taught us to be authentic, make meaningful work, and explore and experiment with a simple starting point, a simple idea, and evolve it. They did not tell us what to do, they did not tell us what was right/wrong, but they provided us with a theme: Time, and guided us down our own paths. It was extremely open with endless possibilities. 27 of us embarked on this journey and created an extreme variety of work in a variety of medium from print to video to installation.
